“GOLD DISCOVERED IN CALIFORNIA!” In 1849, this newspaper headline was an historic call to action! More than 200,000 men, inflamed with gold fever, made the long and perilous journey to California Territory. This is also the story of two prosperous Arizona mining communities that unearthed billions of dollars’ worth of gold. Today, the mines in Oatman and the Vulture Mine near Wickenburg, sit idle.
